Therapy for Grief and Bereavement Treatment

Are You Struggling with Grief, Loss, and Bereavement ?

We understand that losing a loved one can be one of the most difficult experiences in life. Our caring and compassionate therapists are here to help you navigate through this challenging time.

What is Grief?

Grief is a normal reaction to various kinds of losses. The bereavement process takes time and most people can move through the process with little trouble. Some research indicates stages of grief that can be helped with emotional support from others.

However, for some, the bereavement process is extremely complicated and difficult. And people can get stuck, so they are not living their life in the healthiest or happiest way possible. They may carry around a broken heart for many years which can oftentimes prevent them from having close relationships.

When Is Therapy Helpful?

Therapy is especially helpful for people who are having difficulty with the bereavement process. Symptoms of complicated grief can show up as extreme and uncontrolled sadness, extreme numbness and lack of emotional processing, prolonged grieving, withdrawal, depression, anxiety, anger, self-blame, lack of normal functioning, and a failure to move on.

In addition, there are various factors that serve to complicate the bereavement process, including sudden death, multiple losses, previous unresolved losses, ambivalent feelings, traumatic loss, lack of emotional support, and attachment issues.

What Can Therapy Do To Help?

We tailor our clinical approach to the unique needs of each person with whom we work.

There are individual differences in the bereavement process for each person and so we adjust the treatment to the personal needs and abilities of the client. We choose from a number of supportive therapies including:

  • Cognitive behavior therapy
  • Psychoanalytic psychotherapy
  • Self-psychology
  • Stress management
  • Hypnosis

For those with Complicated Grief, we use a Complicated Grief Treatment (CGT) program developed and tested by the Columbia University Center For Complicated Grief. This program is a 16-session, evidence-based approach that helps resolve grief complications and facilitates the natural adaptive process needed for healthy coping.
